Gotham & Beyond Podcast S2Ep19 - King of Crime, a Secret Society Module That Still Works

Episode 19 takes a look at King of Crime, one of the early DC Heroes modules from Mayfair Games, and this one wastes no time getting the city into trouble. Central City is under pressure almost right away, with the Secret Society of Super-Villains making coordinated moves that leave the heroes scrambling from one crisis to the next. That is one of the big strengths of the module. It understands momentum. It gives you a city in trouble, a villain team with personality, and a steady climb in tension that feels very much like an old comic book arc. Instead of one flat plot, you get a string of crimes, public danger, and rising stakes that keep the adventure moving.

What helps King of Crime stand out is how much variety it packs into that setup. The villain lineup is strong, which means the scenes do not all feel the same. You get different kinds of threats, different kinds of problems, and a city that feels like it is being attacked from several angles at once. The module also has a replayable structure, which is a real plus. It is not just something you read once and shelve. There is enough built into it that a GM can get more than one good run out of the material, and that makes it more useful than a lot of old modules.

In this episode, I break down what works, what shows its age, and why King of Crime still has some real life in it if you enjoy older superhero adventures. I talk about the pacing, the villain roster, the way the crimes are structured, and how well the adventure supports the person running it. I also get into the limits, because this is still an older module and you can feel that in places. Some parts are more guided than modern groups might want, and some of the design is very much from its time. Even so, there is a lot here to like.

If you enjoy old DC Heroes material, villain team-ups, citywide panic, and adventures that actually feel playable at the table, King of Crime is worth a second look. It is not just a piece of shelf history. It is the kind of module that still gives you ideas, still gives you pressure, and still knows how to make a superhero city feel like it is on the edge of falling apart.
